Silence

I’m someone who is always on the go. Recently, I hired someone to manage my social media posts—which has been such a blessing. But with that help came something I didn’t expect: extra time. Space. Silence.
And I’ll be honest—I’m not very good at that.
My first instinct was to fill it. What else can I do? What task can I add? But the truth is, I don’t need to fill every moment. This time can be used differently. It can be used to sit, to be still, to talk with God—or simply to be quiet.
Ironically, I chose to write a blog about it.
Silence and stillness aren’t bad things. Yet in a world that celebrates busyness, we try to pack every minute full. We move from one thing to the next without pause.
Let me ask you this—have you ever stopped for ice cream by yourself? When you do, do you sit and enjoy it… or do you drive off, already on to the next thing?
When was the last time you truly noticed the sounds around you? The birds singing their beautiful songs?
I recently had a conversation about this. I always notice birds early in the morning or just before sunset. But during the day, their songs seem drowned out by noise. It made me wonder—what are we missing in the middle of all the busyness?
What do you notice at different times of the day?
When you have a moment of silence, take it in. The sounds, the smells, the sights. The movement of animals. The rhythm of the world around you. There is so much happening that we overlook.
Stillness gives us space to reflect. To breathe. To appreciate.
Do you ever pause and feel the fresh spring air and think, this is exactly what I need—instead of rushing to the next task?
Why are we so uncomfortable with silence?
I’ve worked with coaches over the years, and one phrase always comes up: less is more. It’s simple, but it’s powerful—and often ignored.
In moments of quiet, I find myself saying, “Lord, I am here. What is Your will for me right now?” Sometimes the answer is simply to remain still. Other times, it’s a gentle reminder that whatever I didn’t finish today will still be there tomorrow—and that’s okay.
One of my favorite simple joys comes in the warmer months. After working in a cool, air-conditioned space, I’ll sit in my car before heading home—with the windows up. It warms up like a sauna, and I just sit there, letting the heat settle in. It’s quiet. It’s still. And somehow, it resets me.
Then, I’m ready for whatever comes next.
Maybe silence isn’t something to avoid. Maybe it’s something we’ve been needing all along.
At Active Edge Massage & Wellness in Urbandale, we believe true wellness isn’t just about staying busy—it’s about creating space for your body and mind to reset. Whether through massage therapy, quiet time, or simply slowing down, giving yourself permission to pause can make a powerful difference in how you feel each day. If you’ve been needing a moment to breathe, we’re here to help support that journey toward balance and well-being.
